Grinding oak stumps in NJ and PA

Very large tree stump in the woods with a chainsaw resting on top

Oak is one of the most common stumps in Sussex County and nearby PA, and it is dense, hard wood that takes longer to grind than softer trees.

How it grinds

Oak is among the species that changes how long a stump takes. The wood is hard, so the cutting wheel works through it more slowly than through pine or poplar. Our grinder has 43 replaceable carbide-tipped teeth on a 20 inch wheel.

How the roots spread

Mature oaks tend to send large roots out wide, much of it in the upper few feet of soil. A big oak can have thick roots running well past the stump. A standard grind takes the stump and the exposed roots 6 to 9 inches below grade. If you want the entire root system out, tell us. It costs more, and the yard is dug up a lot more.

Time

On average a 12 inch stump takes 5 to 7 minutes, a 24 inch stump 10 to 18 minutes and a 36 inch stump 20 to 40 minutes. Each stump varies with the species (birch, oak, cedar, ash), the mound, the root system and the landscape.
